Katsina: Bandits Reportedly Kill Three Accomplices After Boy Is Kidnapped and Murdered
By Globalvoice Investigations
Three men from Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State have reportedly been killed by bandits after allegedly kidnapping a boy, collecting ransom from his family and subsequently killing him.
The victim, identified as Umar Sa’ad Moba, was reportedly abducted by the three men and handed over to an armed bandit group.
According to reports, Umar's family subsequently paid millions of naira in ransom in an attempt to secure his release.
But what was expected to be a ransom for release transaction allegedly ended in the boy's death and the subsequent killing of the three men accused of facilitating his abduction.
Boy Allegedly Killed After Ransom Was Paid
Reports indicate that after receiving the ransom, the bandits handed Umar back to the three men, who were allegedly expected to return him to his family.
Instead, the men allegedly took the boy into the bush and killed him.
The alleged reason was particularly disturbing: the suspects reportedly knew Umar personally and feared that he could identify them and expose their involvement in the kidnapping.
They allegedly abandoned his body in the bush and left the area.
Family Raises Alarm After Boy Fails to Return
When Umar failed to return home despite the ransom having been paid, his family reportedly contacted the bandits to find out what had happened.
The bandits allegedly told the family that the boy had already been released to the three men for return to his relatives.
That response reportedly raised suspicion about the whereabouts of the boy.
According to the reports, the bandits subsequently devised a plan to bring the three men back into their custody.
Suspects Allegedly Lured Back
The bandits reportedly told the suspects that additional ransom money had been received, prompting the three men to return.
Upon their arrival, they were allegedly detained and questioned about Umar's whereabouts.
The suspects reportedly confessed to killing the boy and allegedly disclosed the location where they had abandoned his remains.
The reports claim that the three men were subsequently killed by the bandits.
A Disturbing Dimension of Katsina's Kidnapping Crisis
If the account is confirmed, the incident exposes another disturbing dimension of the kidnapping economy in north-western Nigeria: alleged cooperation between local criminal collaborators and armed bandit groups, followed by violent internal disputes over victims, ransom and the risk of exposure.
The reported killing of Umar also highlights the dangers faced by kidnapping victims even after ransom demands have been met.
In this case, the alleged payment of ransom did not guarantee the victim's safe return. Instead, the boy was reportedly killed by those accused of facilitating his abduction because they feared he could identify them.
However, the details remain based on reports that have yet to be independently verified, and the identities and exact circumstances surrounding the deaths of the three alleged accomplices require confirmation from law enforcement authorities.
The case raises a broader question for security agencies: how deeply are local criminal networks embedded in organised kidnapping operations, and how many victims may be disappearing even after their families have paid ransom?
